Small Space, Big Impact: Interior Design Tips That Work in Any Room
We’ve all been there.
You walk into a tiny room and think, “What am I supposed to do with this?” Maybe it’s the box room you’ve been ignoring since you moved in. Or the narrow hallway that feels more like a corridor of doom than a welcoming entrance.
At Dreamcatcher Interiors, we believe no room is too small to make a big impact. In fact, the most rewarding design moments often come from those seemingly awkward spaces that just need a bit of TLC and a lot of smart thinking.
Whether you live in a cosy city apartment or a compact country cottage, these interior design tips will help you turn your small space into something truly special

The Most Common Small Space Mistakes
Let’s start with what not to do, because sometimes we need to break old habits before we can make magic happen.
Over-furnishing
We know you love that oversized corner sofa, but if it eats the entire floor plan, it’s not doing you any favours. Scale really matters.
Ignoring vertical space
Your walls are prime real estate. Floating shelves, tall bookcases, and vertical artwork can draw the eye up and make a space feel grander.
Bad lighting
One sad pendant light (aka the big light) won’t cut it. Layered lighting (ceiling, wall, table) adds dimension, even in small rooms.
Clever Layout Hacks That Actually Work
Create zones
Even a studio flat can have multiple “rooms.” Define your sleep, work, and chill zones with rugs, screens, or clever furniture placement.
Use glass and mirrors
Reflective surfaces bounce light and create the illusion of more space. A statement mirror can double the visual size of a room.
Let it breathe
Leave a bit of breathing room around furniture. You don’t need to fill every corner, emptiness can be elegant.
Flexible furniture = magic
Nesting tables, storage ottomans, foldaway desks, these are your secret weapons.
Storage That Doesn’t Scream ‘Storage’
When space is tight, every piece should work hard. But that doesn’t mean it needs to look utilitarian.
Think hidden: Ottoman beds, window benches, built-in cabinetry around awkward alcoves.
Think beautiful: Woven baskets, ladder shelving, even vintage trunks that double as coffee tables.
Client Case:
One client in Worsley had a box room bursting with kid’s clutter. We turned it into a walk in wardrobe and vanity area with floor-to-ceiling open wardrobes, a small vanity table, and clever storage that hides the chaos. She now calls it her “Posh Room.” All of the changes were done on a budget with clever use of space and some great design hacks and not only that she now has a reading snug in her bedroom where the wardrobes used to be.
Styling Small Doesn’t Mean Playing it Safe
Small spaces often get treated like design afterthoughts. We say, go bold! A statement wallpaper in a tiny WC? Fabulous. A vibrant rug in your snug? Yes, please.
Here’s how to style small like a pro:
- Use a consistent colour palette to maintain flow.
- Add depth with textures: linen, velvet, matte ceramics.
- Anchor with a few key pieces instead of lots of small ones.
Remember, scale is your friend, not your foe.

Why We Don’t Believe in One-Size-Fits-All Design
Design with heart, not hype.
We know you don’t have time for guesswork. You want a space that reflects your lifestyle, not a trend. Our approach to small spaces is the same as any other: customised, intelligent, and a little bit cheeky (just like us).
Whether it’s a Zoom consultation for your awkward hallway or a full-service revamp of your bijou flat, we ask the right questions:
“How do you want to live?”
“What’s the one thing this room should do for you?”
“What makes you smile every time you see it?”
That’s where the magic starts.
Good Things Come in Small Packages
Don’t write off your small space. It might just be the secret star of your home.
All it takes is a bit of strategy, a sprinkle of style, and a designer who sees the potential hiding behind those tight corners.
