Tricks of the Trade:

This is where I let you into a few Interior Design Secrets and explain how to use colour in your home.

Accent Walls: Create a focal point in a room by painting one wall in a bold or contrasting colour. This adds drama and depth without overwhelming the entire space. Choose a wall that naturally draws attention, such as one with a fireplace or large window.
Colour Blocking: Experiment with colour blocking by using contrasting or complementary colours for different zones within a room. This technique can define specific areas within open floor plans or add interest to architectural details like columns or alcoves.

Colour Drenching: This is an absolute favourite of mine; Colour drenching simply means painting everything the same shade: the walls, woodwork, ceiling and even radiators or furniture. It’s become more and more popular recently, but this way of decorating is far from a fleeting trend. Now, thanks to dead flat paint finishes it’s easier than ever to try this out in your space. Whether you want to make a room feel bigger and lighter or cosy and inviting, there’s a way to make colour drenching suit you – it’s all about which colour you choose.

Colourful Furniture and Accessories: Inject colour into your space through furniture, décor, and accessories. Consider vibrant sofas, colourful area rugs, throw pillows, and artwork. These elements can be easily changed to refresh your décor.

Tone-on-Tone: Create a sophisticated and harmonious look by using various shades of a single colour throughout a room. This monochromatic approach adds depth and creates a serene atmosphere.

Colourful Ceilings and Floors: Don’t forget to consider the ceiling and flooring. A colourful ceiling can add a surprising element to a room, while colourful floorings, like patterned tiles or rugs, can anchor the space and tie the colour scheme together.

Coordinate Furniture: Choose a neutral colour for your large furniture pieces, such as a beige or grey sofa. Then, add colourful accent chairs, vibrant throw pillows, and a colourful area rug that ties the room together.
Accessories:  Add artwork, vases, and other décor items in harmonious or complementary colours to complete the look.

Natural Light: The quality of the light, the time of day, and even the time of year can change how we perceive colour under natural light. If your living room receives ample natural light, the colours you choose may appear slightly lighter and brighter during the day. Keep this in mind when selecting paint and décor shades.  Always test your colour choice in the room where it will be situated and never test paint colours directly on your walls.

By thoughtfully incorporating colour into your home using these methods, you can create a space that reflects your style, suits the function of each room, and evokes the desired mood and ambience.  Have fun, be brave and get creative and don’t forget we are here to help if you need any help with your design.
